My son’s Trick-or-Treat getup. At least, I hope that’s all it is.

My son’s Trick-or-Treat getup. At least, I hope that’s all it is.

It’s always a nice surprise when you’re team upsets the favorite. Particularly when the favorites are the World Champs. My beloved Cleveland Browns turned the trick on the N’Owlens Saints Sunday, with our third string quarterback behind center and our receiving corps depleted. It was all defense and Peyton Hillis. So we’re 2-5 going into our bye week. Not playoff bound, but in better shape than Dallas.
Speaking of Dallas (and getting back to fantasy), I’ve lost Tony Romo from a couple of my fantasy teams. Time to hit the waiver wire. Worse (fantasy-wise): Reports Saturday night indicated that Titans receiver Kenny Britt would not be starting due to personal issues. Of course, I sat him in both leagues. Of course, he didn’t start, but did play, and scored three touchdowns. Damn.

So I’m a combined 5-4 for the week, and 29-33-1 for the season in my head-to-head contests.
The less said about my Browns this week, the better. Not that there weren’t some positives coming out of their loss to Titsburgh; Colt McCoy showed he could develop into the real thing, for example, and, um…well, that might be it. That has to be measured against the negatives, specifically two injuries inflicted by James Harrison (one of which is being looked at by the league) to a pair of starting receivers. And I think Roethlisberger was disappointed we didn’t have any cheerleaders for him to hang out with.
Anyway, back to fantasy.

*Sigh*. Both of my quarterbacks are out, so we travel to Pittsburgh next week to welcome Big Ben back by starting our 3rd stringer. I know that popular wisdom says that “On any given Sunday…” etc., but I’m already considering my Browns a 1-5 team. If they somehow pull out a win…oh, hell I’m not even going to bother finishing that thought.

So I’m a combined 4-4-1 for the week, and 22-22-1 for the season in my head-to-head contests, with one undefeated team.
A Good News/Bad News week for your Humble Narrator.
The Good: My Browns finally showed they have some stuff, as they take the Battle of Ohio in a nail-biter that ended 23-20. A good game by T.O. was negated by some tough (some have said “too rough”) defensive plays and good production by running back Peyton Hillis.
The Bad : As a comment on the mindset of fantasy footballers, I was more concerned about my various fantasy teams when Michael Vick got hurt than I was about Michael Vick. After all, he was the QB on 6 of my 9 head-to-heads, as you can tell from the final scores.

My Browns lost a close one to the hated Ravens this week. They were in it until a botched play killed their momentum. But they did better than expected.
How did my teams do this week?

You wonder why I get so excited about my fantasy teams? Because my RL team, the Cleveland Browns, ain’t doin’ so hot. As usual. I have to have something to root for; that’s the main purpose of my fantasy teams.

Almost as exciting as the return of NFL football is the return of Fantasy Football. Millions of armchair quarterbacks and coaches out to prove that they know the game better than anyone else. Some pay for the privilege, most (like me) seek out the free games and play for bragging rights. I know one guy who’s played in the same fantasy league for several years; the last weekend in August, he travels from his home in Alabama to his league’s Fantasy Draft Day gathering in Missouri. I know another that will literally laugh with sinister glee if, say, Peyton Manning has a horrific game, not because he hate the Colts, but because Peyton’s the quarterback on his opponent’s fantasy team. I think it not unlikely that many people care more about Fantasy Football than they do about real-life football (I suppose in the way many people’s online life can be more important to them than reality; but that’s not the topic here today).
I’ve been a fantasy fanatic for about 13 years or so. I play several leagues each year, always free, with which I have average success: I’ve been League Champion, I’ve been a cellar dweller, often in the same season.
This season I’m going to post the results of my games every week. No particular reason I’m sharing this with you. Just that it’s my blog and I feel like doing it.

So I’m a combined 4-5 for the week for my head-to-head contests.
I’m also a member of several Pick’em (with mixed results) and Survival (which all survived Week 1 thanks to the Dolphins) Leagues, but I won’t bore you with (any more) details.
Yep! Happy to see it back!
It’s that time of year again: the weather’s changing, kids are back in school, sunsets are sneaking up on us earlier and earlier, and I go into denial as I increase the number that represents my physical age.
Yes, my friends fall is nigh, and football is back!
I should mention that by “football”, I mean professional, NFL football. I’m not a fan of college football, because the matchups are generally something like Notre Dame hosting Northampton Country Community College with a resultant score of 72-3. Not very interesting to watch. I don’t watch the bowl games, which allegedly feature the best teams, because all of the corporate sponsorships have killed the fun for me. The Cotton Bowl and the Orange Bowl were OK, but the Hooters Fiesta Bowl and the Walmart Fabreze Bowl just seem like three hour product plugs to me. I’m surprised they’re not throwing around bags of Tostitos instead of footballs.
(As a tangent: hey, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and the rest of you. How about taking those millions and millions of dollars you spend to get your name on a football stadium and instead lower the interest rates and fees I have to pay?)
Anyway, back to professional football. Did I say professional? I may be stretching the definition a bit, as I am, have been, and will always be loyal to my team, the hapless Cleveland Browns.
It is not my intent, nor do I have the time, to go into the history of my Brownies, or to analyze the various problems that have in the past, and continue, to plague my team. This post is just a small celebration of the return of the only sport I follow closely (I’m not a baseball or basketball kind of guy, I don’t understand hockey, and golf isn’t really a sport, is it?).
That being said, I had guarded high hopes during the preseason: our quarterback, Jake Delhomme, who many had written off as washed up, looked decent, our draft picks looked like they were ready to play at the pro level, and we had Mike Holmgren running the show. Could this finally be the year?
My enthusiasm took a hit in the last preseason game, when rookie RB Montario Hardesty was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
Still, I’m a diehard fan, and I was psyched for the season opener against Tampa Bay.
Well, that didn’t turn out too well. After building a 14-3 lead, we ended up losing 17-14. Delhomme threw a couple of picks, there were lost fumbles, the defense looked lost in the second half…it was ugly.
Today many “loyal” Browns fans are moaning and groaning and talking about dumping the QB and coach and making plans for what we need to do to have a winning team next year.
After one freakin’ game.
Me? I’m willing to give my team a 623rd chance.
I’m just happy they’re back.

(One of summer’s guilty pleasures for me is the CBS reality series Big Brother. If you haven’t been watching this season, this post will mean nothing to you. Move along; there’s nothing to see here.)
Now that it’s a done deal (although anything can happen in four days, but I’d be very surprised if anything changes) and a Brigade member is going to win the game, my interest level is hovering around “E” (for “Empty”, not “Enzo”). I suppose the eventual winner will “deserve” the $500k, because he lasted longer than the rest of the jury and convinced them to vote for him, but I can’t drum up enough enthusiasm to really care one way or another.
Enzo should be the first of them to go. They all have Final 2 deals with each other, but the Meow Meow hasn’t done anything to justify giving him the $50,000 2nd place money. Other than winning one Veto Comp, what has he done to even earn the money BB’s paid him this summer, other than hanging out at the house? All I remember is him saying “I haven’t started playing this game yet, it’s time to start” several times a day for the past month, bragging about what a tough competitor he is, planning his post-BB future in show biz, taking credit for everything and taking a lot of naps.
I can’t back Lane because of his off-screen personality, which has been well-discussed in various online forums. Look it up, or take my word for it – he’s not a nice guy. Some have suggested that he makes up a lot of his stories for effect, but I doubt it. I don’t want to say much more, because he’s liable to get 2 or 3 of his good buddies together, hunt me down, beat me up and dance with my girlfriend, and harm my cat just for fun.
I guess that leaves Hayden for me to root for, but I’m not happy about that choice, either. Until the past couple of weeks, he’s spent the summer relaxing with the Brigade, letting others do the dirty work. When Britney was trying to prevent Brendon from winning Veto, Hayden grabbed cash and a Hawaii trip and let Matt take the blame, because he knew he was safe. I suppose that could be considered good gameplay, but not by me. But out of the three of them, he’s worked at winning the competitions to keep himself safe the past couple of weeks, so I guess I have to give him that. If he’s in the Final 2, I can’t imagine him not winning. But like he said last night, he’s going to have to get himself there; nobody’s going to take him. Now that it’s on the line, he’s tough to beat, and winning out the competitions is something that should impress the jury, Brigade or not.
That being said, I doubt I’ll be wasting my time on the feeds during the next ten days, and certainly not after Britney’s gone (hey, you never know what can happen). Especially if CBS blocks Wednesday night’s endurance comp. When it’s just the three of them left in the house, the WBRB bubbles will be more interesting than watching that lot congratulate themselves for a week.
I wouldn’t even bother with the broadcast, except I’m curious about what’s happening in the Jury House. Is Vegas Red still pissed that Brendon’s out of the game? I think that was the reason she went over-the-top with Matt, not just because of the cameras, but because she had to have some outlet for her disappointment that she and her man have no BB money in their future. If she’s smart (a stretch, I know), she’ll keep her distance from Ragan (especially after he finds out about Matt’s lie); if she tries rubbing it in that he’s out of the game and asks him mockingly what he thinks of Matt now, the Backyard Slapdown will look like the Paris Peace Talks. It will not end well for her.
I’d consider skipping the finale, too, except it’ll be on right after Survivor, so I’ll be sitting there watching CBS anyway. I’m curious to see the reaction when Ragan is revealed as the Saboteur, since everyone’s so sure it’s Matt. I’m wondering if Brendon will actually propose to Vegas on live TV, and what she’ll say to avoid committing without making both of them look like total idiots.
And I guess I’m looking forward to the whole America’s Favorite thing, which Enzo assumes is his. My druthers would be that J Chen will say that, “Oddly enough, nobody cast any votes this year because you’re such a lame group,” but that’s just a fantasy of mine (one of many that involve Julie, but that’s a topic for another time). I know that a lot of people will be voting for Brendon, but I can’t. He’s not my favorite anything. He didn’t play the game for himself (despite what he told Julie; even the last vote he cast was “For Rachel”), he was a poor sport when it came to losing comps, and I don’t want him to have the chance share any of it with Vegas, either. It’ll just postpone the inevitable. Sorry, Britney haters, but I’ll be voting for her early and often.
